Having failed six times, the young climber returned to the mountain for one last attempt. Leaving the hut before dawn, his small team moved quickly over the frozen rocks. Reaching the summit shortly after noon, they shouted with joy and planted a flag. The descent, however, turned out to be far more dangerous than the climb. Tired and careless, one man slipped, pulling three others with him. Only the leader and two guides survived. Remembered today as a triumph, the first ascent was also a lesson that the top of a mountain is only halfway home.
