Many people reach for a shoe the moment they see a spider. Yet spiders are not only harmless to humans in most cases but also among our most useful neighbours. A single garden spider may catch several thousand insects in a season, many of them pests that damage crops or carry disease. Without spiders, farmers would need far more chemicals, which in turn would harm birds and rivers. The case for sparing them is therefore practical as well as moral: by protecting a creature we dislike, we protect the balance on which our own food depends.
