For years the old clock in our village square had stopped at a quarter past three. One night, just before midnight, people heard it strike thirteen. By the time the mayor arrived, a small crowd had already gathered. Someone had climbed the tower, they said. When the door was opened, they found the caretaker's young son, who had secretly been repairing the clock for weeks. He had hoped to surprise everyone on New Year's Day, but one gear had slipped. The village laughed, then paid for a new bell rope, and the boy has looked after the clock ever since.
